Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) cognitive solutions platform Cognix has impacted Total Contract Value (TCV) of over $1.8 billion since launch in October 2020.

The solution serves to over 270 customers, or about 20% of its base of 1,210 clients that generated over $1 million in annual revenue reported during the second quarter.

Retail giant Walgreens Boots, workplace solutions firm Xerox, Australian utility major AGL and steel manufacturer Outokumpu are among the larger customers who have deployed the Cognix solution since launch.

“More than 37 patents have been granted within a matter of two years and we've been able to win a number of large and integrated deals, by positioning Cognix,” said Ashok Pai, vice president and global head, cognitive business operations (CBO), according to sources.

According to analysts, the Cognix suite of solutions also competes with similar offerings from rival IT service providers, which cater to similar solution segments.

Cognix is a set of pre-built customised solutions, combining business process management, IT applications or software and data centres and servers in one product.

Cognix is a part of TCS deals and not a standalone component. Since its launch, TCS has reported a TCV of over $50 billion.

“We have had 51 (deal) wins so far, since Cognix was launched and the total TCV influence was about $1.8 billion with Cognix,” said Pai. The Cognix suite has 600 configurable, plug-and-play digital solutions.

“For any new proposal, we plug in Cognix as part of service transformation offerings. So, all new engagements have Cognix by default, it is part of the service delivery solution,” he said.

Cognix is meant to take over any repetitive activities in service delivery solutions while delegating complex activities like decision-making or domain-specific solutions to employees.

It is plugged in as part of service transformation offerings for new engagements.

For current customers, it is positioned as a process improvement offering.

Cognix is also being used for in-house TCS projects.

It helps TCS put together innovative commercial models for large complex deals, especially where there are large elements of IT infrastructure and business process outsourcing (BPO), said Phil Fersht, founder and chief executive of HfS Research.

In most instances, these offerings are customised to long-term clients where the provider has institutional knowledge of their clients' operations and technology backbones, he added.

“Accenture's SynOPs platform is similar but largely focused on BPO/business operations (not IT infrastructure) while Infosys' Live Enterprise is the most similar to Cognix but TCS has first-mover advantage here,” Fersht said.
